About Battor and the Volta River

Battor is a village of about 10,000 people located about 45km from the heart of Ghana ’s capital, Accra . From time immemorial the people of Battor have settled along the banks of the Volta River engaged in farming and fishing activities.

During her 54 year reign as Queenmother of the Battor Traditional Area, the late Mama Ehui Asieku III brought economic and social development, national prominence and attention to an already vibrant, storied and proud culture. Today that legacy continues in the hearts and minds of the Battor people.

The people of Battor celebrate two major festivals annually to commemorate their history and culture. The “Tsitsoryi Festival” celebrates their endurance after Volta River floods that nearly wiped out the village many years ago, while the “Hogbeza Festival” celebrates the heroism their forefathers demonstrated in epic battles.

The Volta River it is said is the route by which the people of the ancient kingdom of Ghana fled south from the Islamic invaders in 1076. It was discovered by the early Portuguese traders who reached the coast of West Africa in 1471 and gave the river its name Volta , which means "to meander".
